Is Cannabis helpful in alleviating symptoms of Lupus?

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation throughout the body. A hyperactive immune system that attacks healthy tissue within the body. There currently is no cure for Lupus. Symptoms can be alleviated with the use of corticosteroids, immunosuppressant drugs, and lifestyle changes.

Some common therapeutic properties of cannabinoids are relief of pain and inflammation, which may be beneficial to patients with lupus. The current stance of the Lupus Foundation of America is that we need more research to be done however, they do support the efforts and the potential of marijuana being a viable treatment for Lupus.

Cannabis decreases inflammation in the body by suppressing particular components in the immune system. Cannabis lowers levels of interleukin-2 and raises levels of interleukin-19, this could be beneficial in helping to calm an abnormal immune response. High levels of CBD taken orally have been proven to alleviate some of the symptoms of lupus. A nice high CBD and low THC strain would be Cannatonic, Charlotte's Web, Harlequin, One to One, and Sour Tsunami are all good strains to try.

Your symptoms may be strain-specific meaning you want to treat specific symptoms with specific strains. For instance, if you are fatigued you will not want to medicate with an Indica strain you would want a Sativa strain for its energetic and uplifting qualities. Some good Sativa strains are Super Silver Hash, Sour Diesel, Strawberry Cough. If you are having trouble sleeping you would want an Indica strain such as Afghan Kush, Granddaddy Purple, and Bubba Kush are good strains for sleep. Jack Herer a Hybrid is a good strain for pain relief and will give you the energy to get through the day as well.

In conclusion, while the therapeutic properties of cannabinoids may alleviate some of the symptoms of lupus, it will not cure or treat the disease. You still may need to treat symptoms with current medications until further research is available.
